Summary
Methods to determine if the left or right CV joint is damaged:
1. Judging by abnormal noises. If the CV joint produces regular abnormal noises while the vehicle is moving, it indicates that the CV joint is lacking lubrication inside, and the rubber parts of the CV joint are likely damaged;
2. Noise when turning the steering wheel. If abnormal noises come from the left side of the wheel when turning left, it indicates a fault in the left CV joint, and vice versa;
3. Steering deviation. Due to a fault in the CV joint, the power output on the left and right sides cannot be balanced, causing the vehicle to easily deviate from its path while driving.
A damaged CV joint does not necessarily require replacing the entire axle assembly; it depends on the extent of the damage. If the steel balls or the bearing sleeve are severely worn, the CV joint must be replaced. If the axle shaft is not deformed, replacement is not necessary. However, for better results, replacing the entire axle assembly is the best method, although this will increase repair costs.
During regular maintenance, check whether the rubber parts of the CV joint are damaged or aged. Damage to the CV joint rubber parts will prevent internal lubrication, and over time, the CV joint can easily fall off.
